Faculty fellows offer students advice, and dessert

Faculty fellows open their doors to South 40 residents looking for advice, friendship — and brownies. Veteran fellow Brian Carpenter, PhD, of the Department of Psychology in Arts & Sciences, said the 15-year-old program builds trust and relationships between students and professors and has fundamentally changed the South 40 experience.

Children’s Discovery Institute awards $2.4 million

As part of ongoing efforts to bolster pediatric research and lead to new discoveries, Children’s Discovery Institute plans to award more than $2.4 million to research initiatives at the School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Middle East expert to discuss latest in Egypt

Samer S. Shehata, PhD, a leading Arab-American expert on Middle East politics, will deliver the keynote address at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at a WUSTL symposium titled “The Crisis in Egypt.” The symposium, in Umrath Lounge, also will feature a roundtable discussion on the latest developments in Egypt. It is free and open to the public.

Wild amoebas have complex farming strategies​​

Agriculture is very rare in nonhumans, perhaps because animals that invest energy in growing crops run the risk the crops will be stolen from them. An amoeba has an ingenious solution to this problem, WUSTL researchers have found. Not only does it engage in a primitive kind of farming, it also carries bacteria that poison would-be freeloaders.

Inkstand is a writing workshop for people who serve (such as volunteers, veterans and public service professionals) and want to reflect on their experiences through writing.
